Chicago’s new solar power plant

Courtesy of both the federal economic stimulus legislation and the need to cut back on carbon emissions, Exelon and SunPower recently announced they are to collaborate on the development of a 10 megawatt solar power plant which will be located in the South Side of Chicago at an old industrial site. This project is estimated to be worth around $60 million dollars and is slated to be completed this year.

As a rough estimate, the Chicago solar power plant will have the capacity subsidize traditional power to 1,200 to 1,500 homes with renewable energy. The plant will also cut back on an estimated 31.2 million pounds carbon emissions each year.

Naturally the continued expansion of solar programs across the continental us will inevitably lead to new jobs being created in the green sector.
